Practices are advised to triage their patients using telephone / video consultations at this time, and to provide advice, analgesia and antibiotics where appropriate.
For NHS providers, this activity should now be logged for each patient on the Compass website.
Where this approach is not sufficient to control a patient’s symptoms, referral to an Urgent Dental Centre may be indicated.
Further information may be found here:
What Treatment is Provided at the Urgent Dental Centres?
Treatment at the Urgent Dental Centres is limited to non-aerosol generating procedures (i.e. antibiotic prescription, analgesic management or extractions). Due to stringent social distancing and decontamination procedures, appointments are limited to approximately one patient per hour.
Referrals must be made via the Dental Referrals system using an online form. The referring practitioner must complete the online referral, and the patient is then contacted directly by the appropriate Urgent Dental Centre.
How to Make an Online Referral
Step 1 – Sign up to Dental Referrals here: https://www.dental-referrals.org/dentists/signup/
N.B. this is the same system that NHS practitioners have been using previously for referrals.
This is now available to all dentists, whether NHS or Private. There is no need to have an NHS.net email address. The process should take less than 48 hours to get set up.
Step 2 – Complete the Covid-19 Urgent form for your patient by logging in to the Dental Referrals system: https://www.dental-referrals.org/dentists/
